Dr. Hubert and Dr. Paul

Most medical doctors can not devote enough time to teach their patients what they should be eating.  Appointments are barely long enough to get through the basic necessities, let alone the hours required to help someone change their dietary patterns.  We decided we were tired of letting this stand in our way, and so we formed Nutrition MD.

We knew from our research that diet and nutrition could play a huge role in disease prevention or treatment.  The notion that food could be medicine was becoming more and more accepted in medicine.  And yet patients were rarely being given the opportunity to “try” this new type of medicine!  In particular, as ophthalmologists, we were keenly aware that food could be an effective treatment in macular degeneration, glaucoma, and dry eye; three diseases where patients are sometimes unable to find effective solutions within the standard pharmaceutical options.  It did not make sense to us - why let the disease win before trying everything we could?  Why, if food and nutrition was proven to be effective in fighting these diseases, were patients not being “prescribed” a dietary plan that could help them?

The answer, of course, is that it is very hard to help someone change their diet.  It is impractical for a doctor to “prescribe” a diet because they can not simply write a prescription for it.  Unfortunately the science is too complicated to quickly distill into a few minutes in the clinic.  And figuring out ways to incorporate the right ingredients into a daily meal plan is even more complicated, as it requires recipes with the right amounts of the ingredients but which still taste great.  We do not blame the doctors for not doing this - we ourselves did not have enough time for this in our regular clinic appointments.  Thus we came up with a plan - we would launch a company dedicated to helping patients incorporate “Food As Medicine” into their diet.  And Nutrition MD was born!

We are both board certified ophthalmologists and eye surgeons with years of clinical practice.  We met during our training at Georgetown University, and found that we shared a passion for eating healthy foods and good nutrition.  We are thrilled to be able to utilize our expertise in medical science, patient care, and nutrition to help you to incorporate “Food as Medicine” into your eye care!
